Genre Guide
This guide is an explanation of the story genres. Authors, please use this guide when selecting the genres for your story.
Action/Adventure
Stories with plenty of action or adventure. Most stories in this genre revolve around a mission or some other adventure or dangerous situation the characters get into.
Alternate Universe
Technically, any story that has Daniel and Sam in a romantic relationship would be AU since they are not romantically involved in the TV series, but, for this archive, "alternate universe" refers to fanfics about an AU Daniel and Sam or fics in which episode events happen differently in the story (or before the story) from the way they did in the TV show.
Angst
Stories in which Daniel and/or Sam suffer emotionally. The angst must be an important part of the story. Click Here for a rating scale for Angst, Hurt/Comfort and Smarm.
Crossover
Fanfics that involve the characters of Stargate SG-1 and another TV series, movie, book, etc.
Drabble
Stories that are exactly 100 words long.
Drama
Fics that have dramatic content about Daniel and Sam's relationship, a situation they are in, or their lives in general. "Drama" should not be confused with "angst". "Angst" refers to negative emotional turmoil. "Drama" generally refers to events or circumstances that the characters find themselves involved in. Angst and drama can often be found in the same story, but not all "angsty" fics have drama.
Episode Related
Stories that are directly related to an episode, usually something that took place right before, during or after the episode. This genre is also called "Missing Scenes", "Missing Scenes/Episode Tags" or "Missing Scenes/Epilogues" and refers to things that you could say happened "off-camera". Note: if the events in the story changes the way things happened in the episode, it would be considered "Alternate Universe" rather than "Episode Related".
Family Focused
Fanfics that focus on Daniel and Sam's life as parents, expectant parents, the birth of a child, or on children already born.
Holiday/Special Occasion
Stories revolving around a holiday, celebration or special event, including birthdays, weddings, graduations, etc.
Humor/Parody
Stories that are written to make people laugh or has a lot of humor in it. Includes stories that are intended to be a parody of the TV show.
Hurt/Comfort
Fanfics in which Daniel or Sam are harmed physically or emotionally and the other makes them feel better, whether by easing their physical pain or their emotional wounds, even if it's just by being there for the one who's hurting. Remember that "hurt" without "comfort" does not qualify. Such a story more likely belongs in "Angst", though "angst" does not refer to physical suffering alone. Click Here for a rating scale for Hurt/Comfort, Angst and Smarm.
Mystery
Fics that have a mystery to be solved. The mystery must be an important part of the story. It does not have to involve a crime.
Post-Meridian Angst
There are so many stories out there that deal with the aftermath of Daniel's ascension that I decided it deserved to be a genre. This is for stories taking place while Daniel was ascended in which the effect his ascension ("death") had on his teammates – specifically Sam – is an important part. This is not for fanfics mostly about the events of Full Circle.
PWP
PWP (Plot? What Plot?) stories are basically about one thing: sex. There is little to no real plot. They almost always have the equivalent of an R or NC-17 rating.
Relationship Focused
Stories that focus mainly on Daniel and Sam's relationship, whether that relationship is just friendship or more than friendship. Includes stories that are mostly about Daniel and Sam spending time together, interacting with each other or thinking about each other. Not to be confused with the "Romance Focused" genre, although such a fanfic might also fit in that genre.
Romance Focused
Stories that are mostly romance, that focus almost entirely on the development or continuation of Daniel and Sam's romantic relationship or on a specific romantic event in their lives. They may also include stories in which Daniel and/or Sam are thinking romantically about the other. Not to be confused with "PWP" (see above).
Sequel
Technically, this is not a genre. It's for fics that are a sequel to another story. It is recommended that all fanfics that have a sequel (as well as the sequel itself) be listed in a Series to make it easier for readers to find any sequels and series parts. Go to "Add New Series" in your Account Info to do so.
Smarm
"Smarm" is when characters openly care and worry about each other a great deal in a non-sexual way. For this archive, it can refer both to stories that has the smarm happening just between Daniel and Sam or fics that have the "smarminess" involve any of the regular or semi-regular character in the series as long as Daniel and/or Sam is included in the smarm. Smarm tends to be a very misunderstood genre, some authors believing that any acts of caring or concern would be called Smarm, but such is not the case. For an excellent guide to Smarm, click here. It is a rating scale for Smarm, Angst and Hurt/Comfort.
SongFic/Filk
A "SongFic" is a story that is based entirely around the lyrics of a song. A "Filk" is a story in which an existing song is rewritten or parodied in a way that makes it work with a TV series, usually by using the same tune but changing the words. It can also refer to original songs written about a TV series or character.
Thoughts
Stories that are all or mostly all one or more characters' thoughts (sometimes also called "POV"). For this archive, it needs to be Daniel thinking about Sam, Sam thinking about Daniel, or one of their teammates thinking about Daniel and Sam's relationship.
Tragedy
The title pretty much says it all. Stories about a tragic event above and beyond the level of just angst. This usually includes the death of a major character, so beware, even if there is no warning of a character death.
